These days give residents the opportunity to dispose of old, expired, unneeded or unwanted prescription drugs, OTC drugs and even pet medications in a safe and anonymous way at a series of drop-off locations.

Putnam County residents can stop by the Putnam Hospital Center Wagner Cancer Pavilion at 670 Stoneleigh Avenue in Carmel between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27 to drop off any unwanted medications.

If possible, it’s encouraged to keep medications in their original packaging and remove personal patient information. Syringes, lancets and sharps will also be accepted.

For more information about the Putnam County Medication Take-Back Day, call Victoria DiLonardo at the Putnam County Department of Health at (845) 808-1390 (ext. 43125).

Dutchess County residents can visit drop boxes between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27 at:

  • Northern Dutchess Hospital (6511 Springbrook Avenue in Rhinebeck)
  • Hudson Plaza (3434 North Road in Poughkeepsie, across from Marist College)
  • Dover Elementary School (9 School Street in Dover Plains)

These drop-off locations are also accessible 24 hours a day, seven days per week:

  • Dutchess County Law Enforcement Center (108 Parker Avenue in Poughkeepsie)
  • New York State Police, Troop K Headquarters (2541 Route 44 in Salt Point)
  • City of Beacon Police Department (1 Municipal Plaza in Beacon)
  • East Fishkill Police Department (2468 Route 52 in Hopewell Junction)
  • Hyde Park Police Department (3 Cardinal Road in Hyde Park)
  • Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department (19 Tucker Drive in Poughkeepsie)
  • Wappingers Falls Police Department (2628 South Avenue in Wappingers Falls)

County officials say more than 12,550 pounds of medications have been safely collected and destroyed since the Dutchess County Prescription Medication Drop Box Program was launched in 2014.

“Every resident can take a simple step to help curb the opioid crisis, the public health epidemic of our lifetime,” said Dutchess County Executive Marcus J. Molinaro. “Cleaning out your medicine cabinet, collecting medications that are no longer needed and safely disposing them at one of Dutchess County’s many secure drop boxes will keep them away from someone who might abuse them. National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is a great opportunity for residents to familiarize themselves with these drop boxes, which are available year-round.”
